In front of the whiteboard in the meeting room, a simple sketch clearly shows the structure of an extruded aluminum backplate. This backplate will be used as the main frame of a large industrial 3D printer. It will be produced through aluminum extrusion followed by precision CNC machining. Profile tolerance and straightness are critical to the stability and long-term performance of the machine, so they became the main focus of the discussion.

Our engineer Mason explained the challenges of machining long aluminum parts step by step. Based on the material properties of aluminum extrusions, he discussed how internal stress can cause long parts to bend or deform. He also explained how these accuracy issues could affect final assembly and create risks during long periods of continuous operation.

The discussion covered the full manufacturing process, including machining allowance for the extrusion, aging treatment to reduce internal stress, CNC machining strategy, and geometric tolerance inspection of the finished part. With the help of a few simple sketches, the complete process-control plan became much easier to understand.

The customer carefully followed Mason’s explanation and reviewed the sketch based on the actual working conditions of the 3D printer. Both sides exchanged ideas about tolerance limits, production risks, and manufacturing feasibility.

Instead of focusing only on the numbers shown on the drawing, the discussion centered on one shared goal: keeping the final machine stable and reliable. Project manager Eda also joined the meeting, recorded the key points, and coordinated the next steps for prototyping, testing, and project follow-up.
